The Huffington Post! Yes THE Huffington Post!! Has done a brief editorial on my Princess Avengers. Saying that, "At a time when it's still depressingly normal for franchises like "The Avengers" to be marketed with sexist slogans, Stoll's art is a powerful way to flip princess culture inside out."
A glowing appraisal from one of the most popular sites on the web! Sign me up!
It's nice to receive some publicity for my work, and you'd better believe that I'm gonna milk it for all it's worth, but I honestly wish that it was some of my other art.
The PA's aren't really my property, much less my creative vision. They are conglomerations of characters that don't belong to me, they are even based heavily on the work of other artists and cosplayers.
I began them to practice digital art and manipulation, I initially continued them as a joke, and now I am compelled by their positive reception to produce more. I am most pleased that they have offered a compelling reinvention of feminine icons, and that people have correctly read into some of the gender-swapping subtext.
Still, I can't say that they are truly mine. I don't feel as though they represent my art very well. I can only in good conscience continue to oversee their distribution as long as I make NO money from these works and remind my audience that (in my opinion) fan-art, however skillful, is never fully yours.
Mashing up the creative works of others is not my idea of a meaningful creation.
P.S. THEY INCLUDED THE SULTAN BLACK WIDOW!! XD
I did that as a joke and to buy time to produce without being questioned about the Princess Avengers! I still intend to do a "real" female Black Widow, but seeing my goofy but good-natured trolling on the HuffPost's main page was enough to bring gleeful tears to my eyes.
This day! I have won the Internet.
